Surviving The Odds Breast Cancer Awareness
In Jamaica, breast cancer is the leading cancer in women, followed by cervical cancer. Approximately 300 women die from breast cancer each year.
The incidence is 43 per 100,000, attributing to approximately 1,200 new cases per year. The fatality rate is 50%, three times the rate of the United States. This is mainly due to delayed diagnosis.
Screening for breast cancer is well below the expected rate. It is less than 10% of the eligible population. Causes are multifactorial. Lack of a formal screening program at government hospitals is the main reason, so the burden falls on the population to seek private health care. The process involves a visit to a private doctor; paying a fee; obtaining a requisition for the mammogram; scheduling the procedure; getting the procedure done and paying the fee; and revisiting the private doctor for the report, that requires yet another fee. All this is literally out of reach for the vast majority of the population.

Surviving The Odds
Rural homesteaders are overburdened as the head of their households to keep their family together. But this comes at the huge price of sacrifice! For there is no wiggle room in their budget for their own healthcare.
Your gift will be the gift of life to women in need, through breast cancer awareness. First, by educating them on the importance of regular screenings, and then by providing opportunities to undergo mammograms and follow-up ultrasounds as necessary.
Give the most treasured gift of life to eligible women between the ages of 40-70, who have never in their life undergone a mammogram!

Love in Action Soup Kitchen
The Love In Action Food Kitchen served a total of 10,690 meals in 2022. This was on Wednesdays and Fridays. (This limit of two days was due to COVID-19 restrictions and budget issues). In 2023, from January to March, there were 3,300 meals served on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. There had been some issues in distributing the food, but Sister John was able to secure many volunteers which adds to the success of the program. Many people are grateful for these meals as they might be the only source of food they see all week.
