Queen of Hope

The Compassionate Franciscan Sisters of the Poor have devoted their lives to the poorest of the poor living in the slums of Chokaa, teaching classes in an old converted chicken coop.

But help is on the way! And now they can look forward to a 3-story complex that includes a convent and formation house, mission center with school and daycare, and lodgings for visiting volunteers. This will be the CFSOP headquarters for Africa.

Water for Saint Felix Centre

In 2016, when the Felician Sisters settled in the semi-desert corner of the world, Lengruma community, inhabited by the Samburu and Turkana pastoralist nomads, they recognized that conditions were harsh. Set off the beaten track, in the upper eastern region of Kenya, about 64km from Isiolo town, Lengruma is miserably hot, its earth is parched, and the town is only accessible by trucks and 4-wheel drive vehicles. The most obvious and critical need in this desert region is water.

Even more troubling, as they started visiting the homesteaders and evangelizing, the Sisters discovered that the children were helpless victims of this harsh environment, deprived as they were of basic needs, as well as their right to an education. Even though there was a primary school in the area, it was still a considerable distance away, and what with the cost as well as seasonal rivers, the children were not able to attend. Further, girls were being offered for early marriages from as young as 7–8 years, without their knowledge.

A Classroom For Saint Felix Centre

Conditions are harsh in this semi-desert corner of the world, Lengruma community, inhabited by nomadic communities.

But the Sisters of Saint Felix are determined to be an oasis for the little children. They have opened Saint Felix Centre, where they have been diligently teaching the children in a four-classroom, crudely built wooden building, half eaten away by termites. The children are mostly educated and fed for free, but those who can, make a contribution of $3.86!

You can change the entire educational trajectory for 40 young students by moving them into a classroom that would make you proud!

A House of Formation (Little Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi)

The Little Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi (LSOSF) have stepped out in faith to save them. They have dedicated the 20-acre land they acquired, and are fighting to build a 2-story Formation house, equipped with 45 hostel rooms, a chapel, prayer rooms, a study, and staff offices. Here, young postulants will be trained over a 2-year period, and prepared for the Lord’s service to Kenya’s most vulnerable. Your gift will go a long way in saving the lives of young girls.

St. Joseph's Home of Hope

Hunger is the number one problem. Children living on the streets of Kenya, have to compete with scavenger birds, while digging in the trash for food. They also sniff glue to forget their problems. This is not the life God intended for them. Glue destroys their brain, making them unable to think clearly. They begin to hallucinate and get confused.

Every night they sleep out in the cold, in ditches or on pavements without a mattress or blanket. During rainy season, many catch cold, and there is no medicine for them. Other times they are arrested by the police for petty theft. These children of God are so vulnerable in so many ways. Many do not live to celebrate their 15th birthday! They die alone.

Sr. Mary Wandia’s vision is to expand the work of Adorer Missionary Sisters of the Poor in Kenya, where there are 2.5 million orphans and 300,000 street children. The Orphanage’s initial goal would be to house 150 orphans from Kenyan Streets. The Mission of Saint Joseph’s Home of Hope, will be to give encouragement and hope to these orphans and street children by providing comprehensive support to each individual child, helping them to fulfill their true potential. Such help includes: food, clothing, accommodation, medical, education, and accompaniment.

Water For Little
Sisters of the Poor

The mission of Little Sisters of the Poor (Nyumba Ya Wazee) is to continue the work of Saint Jeanne Jugan, and provide a home and care for the indigent elderly for the remainder of their days. This they have been doing in Nairobi since 1985; currently, 67 people are living a dignified life in this community, that they couldn’t otherwise hope to live. A nurturing environment is fostered at the home. Residents participate in a variety of chores, such as laundry and preparing vegetables, to remain active and maintain a sense of belonging. They attend physiotherapy classes, and every Monday, exercises are done in the garden. The more agile and active help the less mobile with walking.
